As evident in the development of Ammeltz, Sawaday, and other products,
Kazumasa Kobayashi has been striving to develop new products since
before he assumed the post of President. Kobayashi's policies have
become even stronger after his appointment.
Such developments occurred not only at the company itself, but
also in pursuing business tie-ups with overseas firms and enthusiastically
establishing joint ventures. PoliDent and PoliGrip, which went on
sale in 1970, and Corega, which started up in 1980, are all products
of overseas firms.
What's more, "Medicon, Inc.", a joint corporation with
C.R. Bard of the U.S., was established in 1972. In 1976, "Kobayashi
Block Company, Ltd." was founded as a joint venture with Block
Drug Company, Inc.
A substantial overseas strategy and expansion notwithstanding,
there are few companies bearing fruit. Furthermore, although Kobayashi
Pharmaceutical is a company noted in Japan for his trustworthiness
and achievements in wholesale medical supply, the situation is different
abroad.
However, if such things continue to be said, no headway will ever
be made. The methods used by the President to secure business tie-ups
and joint venture establishments resembled a salesman's dive into
door-to-door sales. Single partnerships appeared thanks to the help
of the right connections.
American corporations do not operate under the same custom of connection-influenced
business as does Japan. Even under favorable conditions, the original
partner will still respond to transactions. President Kobayashi
and Managing Director Miyata fought together with partners in this
way on many occasions and gained their trust.
The successes of Kobayashi Block had great significance for the
company's future overseas strategy. With marketing as their priority,
Kobayashi's top leaders and sales force received high marks overseas.
And
while not much as materialized from these efforts concretely, contracted
product exchanges have enjoyed 100% success. These achievements
also reached overseas when inquiries and orders began pouring into
the New York Office and the head office. In addition, sales have
been skyrocketing from overseas as well. Plants and equipment were
reduced by the start-up of such product operations headquarters.
To overcome this, the Shiga Plant was established in March 1970.
And in May 1983, the most substantial time of this period, "Toyama
Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, Inc." (Toyama Plant) was founded
in Osawano-machi, Kaminiikawa-gun, in Toyama Prefecture, paving
the way for the production of Sawaday and other products.
The Kobayashi Pharmaceutical group was also strengthened further
by the goodwill acquisition of Kobayashi Noko in March 1985.
